    What is stainless steel?

    Stainless steel is an iron-chromium alloy with a minimum 10.5 % chromium content that forms a passive, self-healing chromium-oxide film on the surface, resisting corrosion in atmospheric, chemical, marine and high-temperature service. It is supplied in austenitic (304, 316, 321), ferritic (430), duplex (2205, 2507) and martensitic / heat-resisting families, each engineered for a defined balance of corrosion resistance, strength, weldability and aesthetic finish.

    Fabrication & Processing

    From mill bundle to architectural surface.

    Cutting

    Plasma and laser for plate ≤ 25 mm, waterjet for clean edges and ≥ 25 mm, abrasive sawing for bars and tubes. Avoid carbon-steel grinding wheels, they embed iron particles that rust.

    Forming & Bending

    Cold forming preferred, minimum bend radii per EN 10088. Press braking with polyurethane or hard-chrome tooling to protect the surface. Spring-back is higher than carbon steel; over-bend by 5–10 %.

    Welding

    GTAW (TIG) for architectural and thin-wall, GMAW (MIG) for thicker sections, SMAW for field work. Filler grade-matching (ER308L / 316L / 2209). Interpass ≤ 150 °C austenitic, controlled for duplex. Back-purge with argon for hygienic and pipe welds.

    Passivation & Cleaning

    ASTM A967 / A380, nitric or citric acid passivation after fabrication. Pickling paste for weld heat tint. Final rinse with demineralised water in hygienic service.

    Surface Finishing

    Apply No.4 / hairline / mirror / PVD at the mill where possible; site finishing is acceptable for trim only. Cross-grain scratches on directional finishes are visible and irreversible, handle with care, protect with PE film until install.

    Laser-Fused Sections

    T, L, Z, U, I and custom architectural sections fabricated from cold-rolled strip with no filler, sharp corners, tight tolerances, premium aesthetic for facades and exposed structure.

    Common Problems & Solutions

    Why stainless fails, and how to prevent it.

    Tea-staining / superficial rust on coastal facades
    Cause
    Under-specified grade (304 in chloride exposure), insufficient cleaning regime, contamination from carbon-steel tools, salt deposits trapped in surface texture.
    Impact
    Brown discoloration on visible architectural surfaces, premature aesthetic failure, costly re-cleaning or replacement.
    Solution
    Upgrade to 316L minimum for coastal exposure; specify a 12-month cleaning schedule (mild detergent + soft cloth); use stainless-only tools in fabrication; passivate after install.
    Pitting corrosion in chloride / pool service
    Cause
    304 specified in chlorinated water, splash zones or coastal air; chloride concentration in stagnant areas exceeds material PREN.
    Impact
    Small black or rust-bordered pits, eventual perforation, loss of structural integrity in handrails and equipment.
    Solution
    Specify 316L for swimming pools and splash zones; Duplex 2205 or 2507 for high-chloride / warm seawater; design for drainage to avoid chloride concentration.
    Intergranular corrosion at welds (sensitisation)
    Cause
    Standard 304 / 316 welded in thick section without controlled cooling, chromium carbides precipitate at grain boundaries, depleting the boundary of free chromium.
    Impact
    Corrosion along the weld heat-affected zone, knife-line attack, structural failure in chloride or acid service.
    Solution
    Specify L grades (304L / 316L) or stabilised grades (321 / 347) for welded service; control interpass temperature; PMI-verify filler match.
    Heat tint / discoloration around welds
    Cause
    Oxide formation during welding without back-purge; chromium-depleted layer remains on surface.
    Impact
    Visible blue / brown / straw discoloration, reduced corrosion resistance, aesthetic non-conformance in architectural and hygienic work.
    Solution
    Back-purge with argon; remove tint by pickling paste, stainless brushing or electropolishing; passivate to restore the chromium oxide film.
    Cross-contamination from carbon steel
    Cause
    Use of carbon-steel tools, grinding wheels or work surfaces; storage adjacent to carbon-steel components.
    Impact
    Embedded iron particles that rust and stain the stainless surface; corrosion initiation sites.
    Solution
    Dedicated stainless-only tools, grinding wheels and work areas; isolate stainless in storage; passivate or pickle if contamination is suspected.
    Scratches on directional / mirror finishes
    Cause
    Sliding across the grain during install; aggressive site cleaning; tool drops on protective film.
    Impact
    Cross-grain marks visible against No.4 / hairline brush direction; mirror finish scuffs.
    Solution
    Retain PE protective film until final clean; lift rather than slide; use non-abrasive site cleaners; localised re-finishing with matching grit if minor.
    Procurement & Inspection

    The twelve checks before stainless leaves the yard.

    The dispatch protocol TIC Dubai applies on every consignment, and the checklist consultants and QA teams use on inspection at JAFZA, KIZAD, Dammam and project site.

      List grade, dimensions and tonnage per item, e.g. 316L sheet 1.5 × 1250 × 2500 mm No.4, 200 sheets (~ 5.9 t).

    2. 02

      Reference standard, EN 10088-2 / ASTM A240 / JIS G4305 (flat); ASTM A276 / EN 10088-3 (bar); ASTM A312 / EN 10216-5 (pipe).

    3. 03

      Mill test certificate, EN 10204 3.1 minimum; 3.2 for offshore, pressure, lifting and infrastructure. Confirm heat number traceable to each piece.

    4. 04

      PMI verification, portable XRF or OES on dispatch for grade certainty; mandatory for oil & gas, pharma, offshore.

    5. 05

      Surface finish & inspection, visual check for scratches, scale, tint, fingerprints; finish must match the spec (No.4, BA, mirror, PVD, etched).

    6. 06

      Dimensional check, thickness, width, length, straightness, flatness per the referencing standard's tolerance class.

    7. 07

      Edge / cut quality, burr-free, square; PE-film coverage on visible architectural sheet.

    8. 08

      Heat tint check on welded items, chromium-depleted areas pickled or electropolished before dispatch.

      Passivation certificate where specified, ASTM A967 nitric or citric, with chemistry and contact time recorded.

    Storage & Handling

    How stainless stays stainless on a UAE yard.

    • Indoor, dry storage for architectural finishes; outdoor stainless covered and elevated on hardwood dunnage.
    • Strict separation from carbon steel and galvanised steel, no contact, no shared lifting gear, no shared work tables.
    • Retain PE protective film on No.4 / BA / mirror / PVD sheets until final installation; never expose to direct sunlight long term.
    • Stack sheets horizontally on softwood or felt dunnage; do not slide sheet against sheet (cross-grain scratches).
    • Bars and bundles strapped, tagged with heat number, separated by grade and finish.
    • Pipes capped or wrapped to prevent internal contamination; sanitary tubing in dedicated bagged storage.
    • Avoid coastal yards without cover, chloride-laden air can initiate tea-staining on stored sheets within weeks.
    • First-in-first-out rotation; tag every bundle with PO and project reference.

    Grade comparison

    304 vs 316 stainless steel.

    The two most-specified austenitic grades. The decisive difference is the addition of 2 – 3 % molybdenum in 316, which sharply improves resistance to chloride-induced pitting and crevice corrosion, making 316 the minimum recommended grade for coastal UAE and any marine, splash-zone or food-CIP service.

    Low-carbon variants

    304L vs 316L: when to specify the ‘L’ grade.

    The ‘L’ designates a low-carbon variant (≤ 0.030 % C) developed for welded fabrications. Low carbon suppresses chromium-carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zone, eliminating the risk of intergranular corrosion (sensitisation) without post-weld heat treatment. For modern sheet fabrication and process piping, 304L and 316L are the default selection.

    Pipe schedule guidance

    Sch 10S, 40S and 80S: wall thickness per ASME B36.19M.

    Schedule defines wall thickness at a given Nominal Pipe Size. Stainless ‘S’ schedules are thinner than the carbon-steel equivalents because stainless does not require a corrosion allowance.

    Schedule 10 (Sch 10S)

    Light wall, preferred for low-pressure water, drainage, food and architectural runs where weight, cost and weldability matter more than pressure. Common in hygienic dairy, beverage and pharma piping, and architectural handrail and balustrade tube.

    Schedule 40 (Sch 40S)

    Standard wall: the general-purpose stainless pipe schedule for process piping, chemical handling, compressed air, steam condensate and low-pressure utilities up to roughly Class 150 service. The default selection when project specifications do not state otherwise.

    Schedule 80 (Sch 80S)

    Heavy wall, specified for higher-pressure process service, hydrocarbon and chemical lines, sour-gas duty, and Class 300+ flanged systems. Required when corrosion allowance, mechanical loading or pressure rating cannot be met with Sch 40.

    Schedule 5S / 10S vs 40S: selection

    Stainless ‘S’ schedules (5S, 10S, 40S, 80S) are thinner than carbon-steel equivalents because stainless does not require a corrosion allowance. Always confirm pressure class, design temperature and corrosion environment per ASME B31.1 / B31.3 before downgrading from Sch 40S to Sch 10S.

    Food & Beverage

    Hygienic design surfaces in dairy, brewing, beverage, abattoir, bakery and confectionery production. Smooth, cleanable, non-tainting surfaces with Ra ≤ 0.8 µm in product-contact zones, and 316L where chloride-bearing cleaning chemicals are used (CIP/SIP).

    Architecture & Façades

    Premium hotel, retail, mosque, palace and office façades, lift cabs, balustrades, signage and entrance features. Mirror and PVD-coloured finishes for hospitality, brushed No.4 and hairline for commercial. Specify 316 for any external coastal or pool-deck installation.

    Oil, Gas & Petrochemical

    Refinery, gas processing, sour-service and offshore upstream applications across the GCC. Selection is governed by NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 for H₂S service, with typical materials ranging from 316L for utility lines through to duplex, super-duplex and nickel alloys for sour and seawater duty.

    Chemical & Pharmaceutical

    Industrial Fabrication

    Workshop fabrication of frames, skids, ducts, hoppers, conveyors and mechanical assemblies. Choice is driven by mechanical loading, weldability and service environment: 304L for general indoor, 316L when humidity or mild chemical exposure is present.

    Thickness, schedule, tolerance: at a glance.

    Sheet & plate thickness ranges

    Stainless flat products are split by thickness: cold-rolled sheet up to ~6 mm, hot-rolled plate from ~3 mm upwards. Standard widths are 1000, 1219, 1250, 1500 and 2000 mm; lengths 2000, 2440, 3000 and 6000 mm with cut-to-length on request.

    • CR sheets (2B / BA / No.4 / mirror): 0.3 – 6.0 mm thick
    • HR plates: 3 – 100 mm (heavier on indent)
    • CR coils: 0.3 – 3.0 mm, slit-to-width from 20 mm
    • HRAP coils: 2.5 – 12.0 mm
    • Tolerances to EN 10259 / ASTM A480 (Class A or B as specified)

    Pipe & tube dimensional system

    Stainless pipes are dimensioned by NPS (Nominal Pipe Size) and Schedule per ASME B36.19M; stainless tubes are dimensioned by actual OD × wall per EN ISO 1127 and ASTM A554. Specifying the correct system avoids costly mis-orders.

    Do you keep stock in Dubai?

    TIC Dubai is a mill representation and international procurement company. Rather than holding warehouse stock, we coordinate factory-direct shipments sized to your project and consolidate deliveries against your programme.

    Can I buy a few sheets or a single length?

    Our supply model is built around container-load and project quantities. For small retail requirements, a local stockist will serve you faster; for bulk, project or recurring procurement, we're the right partner.

    Do you supply containers directly from the factory?

    Yes. Every enquiry is quoted mill-direct, with forward production booking, third-party inspection and shipment coordinated by our procurement team, from FOB origin through to your discharge port.

    Can you support recurring procurement?

    Yes. Long-term supply agreements and forward production bookings are the core of what we do for importers, contractors, distributors and EPC firms across the GCC and wider Middle East.

    What is your minimum order?
