Which standards dominate GCC structural steel specifications
Across the UAE and Saudi Arabia, structural steel is most commonly specified to EN 10025 (parts 2 and 4), ASTM A36 / A572 / A992, and historical BS 4360 grades that persist in older masterspecs. EPC contractors working on Aramco, ADNOC, NEOM and major infrastructure programmes typically require dual-certified material with full mill test certificates (MTCs) traceable to the heat number.
For warehouses, industrial buildings and commercial steel structures, S275JR and S355JR/J2 to EN 10025-2 remain the most-used grades. For weathering or fire-resistant builds, EN 10025-5 or A588 are specified in dedicated tenders.
Specifying H beams, I beams and universal columns
H beams (HEA/HEB to EN 10365) and universal columns (UC to BS 4-1) are not interchangeable on stamp drawings; flange thickness, root radius and weight per metre differ materially. When a project is bid against EN sections but a fabricator quotes equivalent ASTM W-shapes, the consultant should re-check connection design.
