Yard storage fundamentals
Cross-stack squared logs on 100 mm timber bearers above ground level, with airflow between layers achieved by sticker spacers (25 mm minimum) every metre along the length. Cover the top of the stack with breathable shade tarp, not opaque plastic, which traps condensation and causes surface staining.
End sealing
Apply wax-based end sealer (Anchorseal, Mobilcer or equivalent) to all freshly cut ends within 24 hours. End checks form when ends lose moisture faster than the rest of the section; sealing slows end drying to match the body drying rate.
Stack height and stability
Maximum stack heights to maintain integrity: 4 m for 300 mm sections, 3 m for 200 mm, 2 m for 150 mm. Build vertical battens every 2 m along the stack length to prevent lateral movement during forklift access.
Acclimatisation before machining
KD hardwoods: 2-4 weeks in the conditioned interior of the joinery before machining. AD hardwoods: 8-12 weeks under cover, then 2-4 weeks indoors. The goal is to reach equilibrium MC (8-10% in a typical UAE A/C interior) before cutting; machining before acclimatisation locks in cumulative shrinkage that surfaces months later as gaps and splits.
UAE summer humidity considerations
Coastal UAE relative humidity in summer can exceed 80% at night, dropping to 30% by mid-afternoon. Outdoor yards experience daily MC swings of 2-3%. Keep premium joinery stock indoors during June-September; outdoor storage is acceptable for AD construction stock and re-sawing feedstock.
