    Hardwood Export Specifications for GCC Buyers

    Everything that needs to be in the file before the container leaves the load port, and what to check when it arrives.

    Documentation set

    Original Bill of Lading, commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, phytosanitary certificate (issued at load port by the competent plant-protection authority), chain-of-custody certificate (FSC®, PEFC, OLB) where applicable, EUDR due-diligence statement for EU re-export, and ISPM-15 heat-treatment certificate where the destination jurisdiction requires it.

    Packaging and banding

    Squared logs are bundled by section and length, banded with steel or polyester strapping at three points minimum, with plastic corner protection at banding contact points. A moisture barrier (LDPE or VCI sheet) is applied for sea-freight to mitigate condensation in transit through tropical and equatorial zones.

    Load-port inspection

    Third-party inspection (SGS, Bureau Veritas, TUV, NHLA-certified graders) is coordinated at the load port for buyers requiring independent verification. Inspection covers species verification, dimensional accuracy on a representative sample, MC measurement, grade conformity, quantity reconciliation, container loading photographs and seal number.

    Common destination issues and how to avoid them

    Species mis-declaration: avoid by specifying botanical name on PO and requiring species verification at load port. Moisture surprises: avoid by inserting a 2 kg sample bag and re-testing on arrival. Documentation gaps at customs: avoid by routing the documentation set in original courier to the clearing agent before vessel arrival.

    Frequently asked questions

    Do I need ISPM-15 heat treatment for hardwood square logs to UAE?
    Not for the timber itself (only for wooden packaging materials). Confirm with destination customs and your clearing agent on a per-shipment basis.
    How does EUDR affect my GCC purchase?
    EUDR applies to placement of timber on the EU market. If you re-export from the GCC to the EU, the EUDR due-diligence statement must accompany the shipment. For domestic GCC use, it is not a legal requirement but is a strong sustainability signal.
    Who pays for load-port inspection?
    Convention varies. TIC Dubai's standard is buyer-paid third-party inspection, costing 0.5-1.5% of FOB value; we coordinate it on your behalf at no admin charge.
