    What is an I-beam used for?

    I-beams are the workhorse bending section in steel construction. Their tall, narrow geometry concentrates material at the extreme fibres where bending stresses peak, giving high section modulus per kg of steel. Typical applications include floor and roof beams, secondary framing in industrial sheds, crane gantry beams, bridge stringers, conveyor supports, and vehicle chassis.

    I-beam vs H-beam: which is stronger?

    Strength depends on the loading. I-beams are more efficient under pure bending, for a given weight, they carry more bending moment because the deep web maximises section modulus. H-beams are stronger under axial compression and biaxial loading because the wide flanges resist buckling in both directions. The rule of thumb: I-beams for beams, H-beams for columns.
