FR MDF, Fire Retardant / Flame Retardant / Fire-Rated

Fire Retardant MDF, also known as Flame Retardant MDF and Fire-Rated MDF, engineered with fire-retardant chemistry and tinted red for instant identification on site. Specified by architects and fire consultants for hospitality, healthcare, schools, airports and public-building fit-out where Euroclass B fire performance is required.

    Overview

    Technical overview.

Fire Retardant MDF, universally abbreviated FR MDF in architectural specifications and building codes, and also called Flame Retardant MDF and Fire-Rated MDF, is the specified panel substrate for any interior fit-out that must meet fire-performance regulations, including hospitality, healthcare, education, transport and public buildings. The fire-retardant chemistry is integrated into the panel during manufacture, not surface-applied, so the performance is consistent through the full panel thickness.

FR MDF (Fire Retardant MDF / Flame Retardant MDF / Fire-Rated MDF) is a Medium Density Fibreboard manufactured with fire-retardant additives that suppress flame spread, reduce heat release and limit smoke generation. The retardant chemistry is dispersed homogeneously through the fibre mat before pressing, giving the finished panel a tinted red core that allows fast on-site verification. Performance is typically rated to Euroclass B-s1, d0 (EN 13501-1) or Class 1 (BS 476-7), depending on mill and grade.

FR MDF is fire-retardant, not fire-proof. It is engineered to slow flame spread and smoke release for life-safety and code compliance; final fire performance always depends on the assembly, finish and detailing.

    Standards

    Certified to international specification.

    EN 622-5
European standard for MDF, defining dry-process fibreboards, mechanical and physical requirements (general-purpose MDF and MDF.H moisture-resistant grades).
    EN 13501-1
European reaction-to-fire classification (Euroclass) for construction products. It assigns ratings A1, A2, B, C, D, E, F with smoke (s1–s3) and droplet (d0–d2) modifiers. FR MDF is typically B-s1, d0.
    CARB P2
California Air Resources Board Phase 2 formaldehyde emission limit. Stricter than E1 and widely specified for premium furniture and US-market exports.
    BS 476-7
British surface spread of flame test. A historic UK fire classification used alongside EN 13501-1 in many regional specifications.
