    Hardboard (High Density Fibreboard)

High-density fibreboard panels for furniture, packaging, industrial and construction applications. Dense engineered wood-fibre panels manufactured under heat and pressure, offering strength, dimensional stability and versatility across multiple industries.

    Overview

    What hardboard is.

Hardboard is a high-density engineered wood fibre panel manufactured under intense heat and pressure. It is one of the most versatile substrates in the global panel industry, specified across furniture, packaging, automotive, construction and industrial manufacturing for its strength, smooth surface and dimensional stability.

Hardboard is produced by exploding wood chips into individual fibres and consolidating them under heat and pressure into a dense, uniform panel with a typical density of 900 kg/m³ or higher. The resulting board offers a smooth, hard face suitable for paint, print or lamination, with excellent machinability and consistent quality across long production runs. It is a natural wood-fibre product with no added structural binders beyond the fibres' own lignin in classic wet-process manufacture.

    Variants & Grades

    Hardboard variants.

    STD

    Standard Hardboard

General-purpose hardboard with a smooth face and natural fibre reverse. The default panel for furniture backing, drawer bases and cabinet backs.

    TMP

    Tempered Hardboard

Hardboard treated with oil and heat for higher density, higher strength and improved moisture resistance. Used where greater durability is required.

    S2S

    Smooth-Two-Sides

Hardboard with two finished faces, used for door skins, perforated panels and applications requiring two visible surfaces.

    PRE

    Pre-finished Hardboard

Hardboard with melamine, paint or printed finish applied at mill, used in modular furniture, garage panels and decorative backings.

    Advantages

    Why it's specified.

    • Universal applications across furniture, packaging, industrial and construction
    • High strength relative to thickness and weight
    • High flexibility, thin panels bend cleanly without cracking
    • Smooth surface ideal for paint, print, lamination and veneer
    • Natural wood-fibre composition with no plastic or mineral fillers
    • Good machinability, cuts, drills, routes and punches cleanly
    • Consistent quality and uniform density across the panel
    • Suitable for furniture and packaging industry production lines
    • Excellent dimensional stability under normal interior conditions
    • Cost-effective panel solution at industrial volume
    Considerations

    Where to specify carefully.

    • Standard (untempered) grades absorb water rapidly; not for wet zones
    • Thin panels are flexible and require backing support in large spans
    • Brittle in very thin sections; handle with care during installation
    Standards
