    Softboard (Wood Fibre Insulation Board)

Low-density wood fibre board for thermal insulation, acoustic absorption, pinboard surfaces and furniture backing. Natural, sustainable and breathable and engineered for healthy interiors.

    Overview

    What softboard is.

Softboard (also known as wood fibre insulation board, soft fibreboard or pinboard) is a low-density natural-fibre panel engineered for thermal insulation, acoustic absorption, pinboard surfaces, furniture backing and sustainable construction. Its open fibre structure makes it breathable, light and exceptionally acoustically and thermally efficient.

Softboard is a low-density (≤ 400 kg/m³) wood fibre panel manufactured by either a wet process (no added resin, where natural lignin bonds the fibres) or a dry process (small addition of binder). The open fibre structure traps air, delivering thermal insulation and acoustic absorption that no dense engineered panel can match, while remaining fully recyclable and biodegradable.

    Variants & Grades

    Softboard variants.

    SB-A

    Acoustic Softboard

Engineered for sound absorption, used as acoustic substrate in studios, offices, hospitality and educational interiors. Often perforated, fabric-wrapped or covered.

    SB-T

    Thermal Softboard

Wood-fibre insulation board for breathable thermal insulation in walls, roofs and floors. Healthy, vapour-open, naturally hygroscopic, used widely in sustainable and Passive House construction.

    SB-P

    Pinboard / Bulletin Board

Natural pinboard substrate for offices, schools, hospitals and retail, durable to repeated pinning, often fabric-faced.

    SB-B

    Furniture Backing Softboard

Light, low-cost back panel for wardrobes, dressers and shelving, replacing hardboard where weight and cost matter.

    Applications

    Where softboard is specified.

    • Acoustic absorbing wall and ceiling substrates
    • Thermal insulation in walls, roofs and floors (sustainable construction)
    • Pinboard and bulletin board surfaces: offices, schools, hospitality
    • Furniture backing and drawer bottoms
    • Door cores and lightweight partition cores
    • Underlay below timber and laminate flooring
    • Acoustic isolation layer in cinema, studio and conference fit-out
    • Packaging cushioning and protective layers
    Advantages

    Why it's specified.

    • Excellent acoustic absorption (open fibre structure)
    • Strong thermal insulation (low density, low conductivity)
    • Breathable and vapour-open, managing indoor humidity naturally
    • Pinable surface that accepts and releases pins thousands of times
    • Lightweight and easy to handle and install
    • Renewable, recyclable and biodegradable, with a strong sustainability profile
    • Low embodied carbon vs synthetic insulation
    Considerations

    Where to specify carefully.

    • Not structural: must not be specified for any loadbearing application
    • Lower face hardness than hardboard; protect from impact
    • Untreated grades are not fire-rated; specify FR-treated variants where code requires
