Hardboard is a high-density engineered wood panel made by compressing wood fibres under heat and pressure. It produces a dense, dimensionally stable sheet with a smooth surface, widely used across furniture, packaging, automotive, construction and industrial applications.

What is hardboard made from?

Hardboard is made from natural wood fibres extracted by exploding wood chips into individual cellulose fibres. These fibres are then consolidated under intense heat and pressure into a uniform, high-density panel. Classic hardboard is bonded primarily by the wood's own lignin.

Is hardboard stronger than MDF?

Yes, in terms of density and surface hardness. Hardboard has a density of 900 kg/m³ or higher, compared with 600–800 kg/m³ for MDF. It has a harder face and higher tensile strength per millimetre of thickness, which is why it is preferred for thin backing, door skins and protective panels.

Can hardboard be painted?

Yes. The smooth, dense face accepts paint, primer and printing inks very well. Lightly key the surface with fine sandpaper and use a quality primer for best adhesion. Hardboard is widely used as a painted substrate for furniture, displays and signage.

Can hardboard be laminated?

Yes. Hardboard is regularly faced with melamine, decorative paper, foil, veneer and HPL. Its smooth, uniform surface makes it an excellent lamination substrate, especially in modular furniture, wardrobes and retail fit-out.

Is hardboard moisture resistant?

Standard hardboard is suitable for normal interior conditions but not for prolonged wet exposure. Tempered hardboard, which is oil-impregnated and heat-cured, offers higher moisture resistance and is preferred for semi-humid environments.

What thicknesses are available?

We supply hardboard in 2.0, 2.4, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, 6.0, 7.0 and 8.0 mm thicknesses. 3.0 mm is the global furniture-backing standard, while 4.0–6.0 mm are typical for door skins, protective panels and packaging.

What sheet sizes are available?

Standard sizes are 1220×1830, 1220×2140, 1220×2440, 1220×2750, 1220×3050 and 1610×2440 mm. Other dimensions may be available upon request.

Can hardboard be used for furniture backs?

Yes, this is the single largest use of hardboard worldwide. Its thin profile, smooth face and dimensional stability make it the default substrate for wardrobe backs, drawer bottoms, cabinet backs and shelving backs.

Can hardboard be used for packaging?

Yes. Hardboard is widely used in industrial packaging, protective layers, separators and case construction. Its strength-to-weight ratio and clean machinability make it efficient for high-volume packaging lines.

Can hardboard be machined?

Yes. Hardboard cuts, drills, routes, punches and CNC-machines cleanly with standard wood and panel tooling. Its uniform density means edges machine consistently without tear-out or voids.

What is the difference between hardboard and MDF?

Hardboard is high-density (≥ 900 kg/m³) and supplied thin (typically 2.0–8.0 mm), engineered for backing, skins and protective panels. MDF is medium-density (600–800 kg/m³) and supplied thicker (typically 6–25 mm), engineered for cabinetry, mouldings and shutters. They complement each other in furniture production.

What is the difference between hardboard and particle board?

Particle board is made from wood chips bonded with resin and is used as a carcass substrate at 16–25 mm. Hardboard is made from wood fibres compressed to higher density and is supplied much thinner, for backing, skins and protective panels. They serve different roles in the same piece of furniture.

What is the difference between hardboard and softboard?

Both are wood-fibre panels, but at opposite ends of the density spectrum. Hardboard is high-density (≥ 900 kg/m³), thin and hard-faced, used as a structural backing or skin. Softboard is low-density (200–400 kg/m³), thicker and soft, used for insulation, pinboards and acoustic applications.

When should I choose hardboard over alternative panels?

Choose hardboard when you need a thin, dense, smooth panel for furniture backing, drawer bottoms, door components, packaging, protective boards or display systems. Its combination of strength, machinability, smooth surface and low cost is difficult to match with any other engineered panel.
