    Radiata Pine vs Scots Pine: A Sawmill Buyer's Comparison

    Two pines, two continents, two different industrial profiles. Where each one wins, and how to choose between them for your sawmill programme.

    Botanical and growth differences

    Radiata pine (Pinus radiata): native to a tiny coastal Californian range, now the world's dominant plantation softwood with millions of hectares planted in New Zealand, Chile, Australia, Spain and South Africa. Rotation: 25-30 years. Logs typically 30-45 cm small-end diameter.

    Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris): native to a vast range from Scotland to Siberia, grown plantation and semi-natural across Russia, Baltics, Finland, Sweden, Poland and Germany. Rotation: 60-100 years. Logs typically 20-35 cm small-end diameter.

    Density, durability and treatability

    Radiata pine: 480-520 kg/m³ at 12% MC, Janka ~3,300 N, durability class 4-5 (non-durable untreated, durability class 1-2 with full-cell CCA treatment). Heartwood pale cream to honey.

    Scots pine: 510-560 kg/m³ at 12% MC, Janka ~4,000 N, durability class 3-4 (slightly more naturally durable than radiata), takes treatment well but with slower penetration than radiata. Heartwood pinkish-red to light brown.

    Radiata's exceptional treatability is the commercial moat, full-cell CCA treatment penetrates the sapwood completely, lifting durability to ground-contact spec for fence posts, utility timbers and outdoor decking.

    Supply, price and lead time

    Radiata: shipped in massive bulk volumes (50,000+ m³ vessels) from New Zealand, Chile and Brazil. Lead time GCC: 40-55 days. Price: cost-competitive on a delivered basis, especially via bulk carriers to Jebel Ali, Hamriyah and Sohar.

    Scots pine: shipped via St Petersburg, Riga, Klaipeda, Hamburg and Antwerp. Lead time GCC: 25-35 days via container or break-bulk. Price: 10-20% premium over radiata for equivalent grade, partly offset by shorter transit and higher mechanical properties.

    Best applications for each

    Radiata pine: pressure-treated outdoor timber, formwork lumber, pallet stock, MDF and particleboard furnish, plywood veneer (peeling), packaging, general construction softwood.

    Scots pine: high-spec interior joinery, pressure-treated utility poles, structural framing for cold and humid climates, fenestration (windows and doors), upmarket pallet and crate stock.

    Which is harder, radiata or Scots pine?
    Scots pine is denser (510-560 kg/m³) and harder (Janka ~4,000 N) than radiata pine (480-520 kg/m³, Janka ~3,300 N). The difference is meaningful for joinery and machining but not enormous.
    Which pine takes pressure treatment better?
    Radiata pine has exceptional permeability and accepts full-cell CCA, ACQ and MCA treatment cleanly across the sapwood. Scots pine treats well but with slower penetration; sapwood treats faster than the more refractory heartwood.
    Can I use radiata pine for structural framing?
    Yes, radiata is widely used for structural framing when graded to MGP (Australian/NZ) or visual stress grades and pressure-treated for service class 2-3 exposure. Engineered radiata LVL is a major structural product worldwide.
