Why pine takes treatment so well
Pine sapwood is highly permeable, the cell structure accepts preservative chemicals under vacuum-pressure cycles cleanly and uniformly. Radiata pine in particular reaches full-cell penetration across the sapwood envelope, lifting outdoor durability from class 4-5 (untreated, 1-5 year life) to class 1 (ground-contact, 25-50 year life).
The treatment systems in use
CCA (Chromated Copper Arsenate): the historical workhorse for utility poles, marine piles and heavy outdoor timber. Greenish coloration. Restricted for residential use in many countries; still used industrially and in many emerging markets.
ACQ (Alkaline Copper Quaternary): the residential and decking standard, copper plus quaternary ammonium biocide. Brownish-green.
MCA (Micronized Copper Azole) / CA-B (Copper Azole Type B): the modern lighter-coloured residential preservative, smaller copper particles, lower visual impact, used for decks, fence posts and landscape timber.
Boron, creosote and oil-based systems serve specialty applications.
Service classes and hazard classes
H1: dry interior, no treatment required. H2: above-ground interior with occasional damp. H3: above-ground exterior exposed to weather. H4: in-ground contact, post foundations and pole bases. H5: in-ground heavy-duty, marine fresh water, retaining walls. H6: marine salt water, piling.
Each class has a defined preservative retention requirement in kg/m³ active ingredient.
Specifying pressure-treated pine on a GCC tender
State: species (Pinus radiata), treatment system (CCA, ACQ, MCA), hazard class (H3, H4, H5), retention level (kg/m³ active), end-use (decking, pole, landscape, marine), and inspection authority. Treatment penetration and retention is verified by core sample; specify which standard (AWPA, AS/NZS, EN 351) the contract follows.
