    Beech Multiplex (Buchensperrholz): The Premium Plywood Guide

    The dimensionally stable, multi-ply premium panel that European workshops have built jigs and work surfaces from for a century.

    What beech multiplex is

    Beech multiplex (Buchensperrholz) is an all-beech cross-bonded plywood, typically 9 to 30 mm thick, made from 9 to 23 individual 1.5–2.0 mm beech veneer plies cross-bonded under phenolic resin. Every ply is beech, face, back and core, distinguishing it from beech-faced plywood with poplar or pine cores.

    Why workshops choose multiplex over MDF or particleboard

    Dimensional stability under load, edge-screwing without splitting, predictable screw and dowel holding, low formaldehyde emission (E1 / CARB Phase 2), and a clean machinable edge that takes solid-wood edge banding cleanly. The premium European choice for CNC jigs, fixturing, machine bases and high-load work surfaces.

    Thicknesses and face grades

    Standard thicknesses: 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27 and 30 mm. Standard sheet sizes: 1250×2500 mm and 1500×3000 mm. Face grades: BB/BB (top), B/BB and B/B (premium). Glue line: PF (phenolic, WBP) or MUF (urea, MR), specify on RFQ.

    Typical applications

    CNC routing tables and jig stock, drilling jigs and assembly fixtures, machine tool tops, kitchen work surfaces (with lacquer), audio speaker cabinets, riser sets and stair treads, premium furniture carcass, and exhibition stand construction.

    Frequently asked questions

    Is beech multiplex stronger than birch multiplex?
    Comparable. Birch multiplex (Baltic birch) has slightly higher density; beech multiplex has more uniform colour and is the European preference for furniture-visible applications.
    What is the difference between beech multiplex and beech-faced plywood?
    Multiplex is all-beech, face to core. Beech-faced plywood has beech veneer only on the visible faces, with poplar or pine core plies, cheaper but less stable.
    Can beech multiplex be used outdoors?
    Only with WBP (phenolic) glue line and full edge sealing, and even then it is not a long-term exterior board. Use marine plywood for outdoor structural work.
