    What is Aluminium Alloy 5083?

    Aluminium Alloy 5083 is the highest-strength non-heat-treatable aluminium alloy in commercial use, and the world's leading marine structural plate alloy. The high magnesium content (4.0–4.9 %) delivers exceptional strength and saltwater corrosion resistance, while manganese and chromium control grain structure and stress-corrosion behaviour. 5083 is the alloy specified for ship hulls, LNG tanks, offshore structures and any high-load marine welded fabrication where structural integrity in seawater cannot be compromised.

    5083 welds exceptionally well with 5183, 5356 or 5556 filler; welded-joint strength is among the highest in the aluminium family. Cold forming is possible but requires more force than 5052. ASTM B928 ('H116', 'H321' tempers) certifies marine-grade resistance to exfoliation and stress-corrosion cracking.

    Limitations

    • Not heat-treatable
    • Should not be held above 65 °C for extended periods (sensitisation risk)
    • Lower formability than 5052 due to higher Mg content
