GCC Ports and the Construction Materials Supply Chain

Port choice quietly drives lead time, demurrage exposure and inland trucking cost. A procurement-side view of GCC logistics for construction materials.

UAE: Jebel Ali, Khalifa, Hamriyah, Khor Fakkan

Jebel Ali Port (JAFZA) remains the default gateway for containerised construction materials into the UAE, with the deepest draft, highest line frequency, and direct rail/road links to Dubai Industrial City, DIP and onward to Abu Dhabi.

Khalifa Port (KIZAD) increasingly handles bulk steel and project cargo destined for Abu Dhabi industrial corridors. Hamriyah Port serves Sharjah Industrial Area and Northern Emirates fabricators with shorter inland trucking. Khor Fakkan and Port Rashid handle specialised flows including transhipment to Oman and Iran.

Saudi Arabia: Jeddah, Dammam, King Abdullah, Jubail, Yanbu

Jeddah Islamic Port is the western gateway; Mecca, Medina, Tabuk and most of central KSA route through here for construction inbound. King Abdulaziz Port Dammam serves the Eastern Province, including Jubail and Al Khobar industrial corridors, and is the natural choice for steel and pipe destined for Aramco supply chains.

King Abdullah Port near Rabigh is gaining share for general cargo on the Red Sea. Jubail Commercial Port and Yanbu Commercial Port handle dedicated petrochemical and project cargo flows.

Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Jordan, Iraq

Qatar consolidates at Hamad Port, with inland flow to Doha, Lusail, Al Rayyan, Mesaieed and Al Wakrah. Kuwait splits between Shuwaikh Port (urban construction), Shuaiba Port (industrial) and Mina Al Ahmadi (oil & gas). Bahrain runs through Khalifa Bin Salman Port serving Manama, Muharraq, Riffa and Sitra.

Oman is anchored by Port of Sohar (industrial), Port of Salalah (transhipment) and Port of Duqm (emerging SEZ). Jordan-bound material lands at the Port of Aqaba for onward trucking to Amman, Zarqa and Irbid. Iraq construction flows route through Umm Qasr and Khor Al Zubair, then inland to Basra, Baghdad, Erbil, Mosul, Najaf and Karbala.

Picking a port for a project

The cheapest FOB rarely wins. Total landed cost is mill price + sea freight + port handling + demurrage risk + inland trucking, and the trucking leg often dominates inside KSA and Iraq. TIC Dubai routes each shipment through the port that minimises landed cost for the contractor's final delivery point.
