Why are seamless pipes more expensive than ERW?

Seamless pipes require a more complex hot-rolling manufacturing process from a solid billet, with stricter inspection and testing. The absence of a longitudinal weld and the superior pressure / temperature performance justify the premium for critical applications.

What is the difference between A106 Gr.B and API 5L Gr.B?

A106 Gr.B is for high-temperature service (refinery, boiler, steam). API 5L Gr.B is for pipeline service (oil & gas conveyance). Mechanical requirements are similar; chemistry and intended-use specs differ; they are not always interchangeable.

Manufacturing process

Round billets are heated and pierced by a Mannesmann or Assel mill into a hollow shell, then hot-rolled over a mandrel to the required dimensions, sized, straightened and inspected (UT / hydrostatic).
