Aluminium Alloy 3003: Manganese alloy: general purpose.
The workhorse aluminium alloy. Approximately 20 % stronger than 1100 with the same excellent formability, specified for cladding, roofing, ducting and general sheet-metal fabrication.
What is Aluminium Alloy 3003?
Aluminium Alloy 3003 is the most widely produced wrought aluminium alloy in the world. The addition of ~1.2 % manganese gives roughly 20 % more strength than 1100 with no measurable loss in formability, weldability or corrosion resistance. 3003 is non-heat-treatable; strength is developed by cold working, expressed as H-tempers (H12, H14, H16, H18, H22, etc.). It is the standard specification for general-purpose sheet, plate and coil where moderate strength, excellent corrosion resistance and easy fabrication are required.
3003 cold-forms, spins, draws, bends and roll-forms beautifully. It welds readily by TIG and MIG with 4043 or 5356 filler. It machines better than 1100 but still benefits from sharp tooling and ample lubrication. Anodises to a clear, slightly milky finish.

Where 3003 is specified.
- Roofing & cladding sheet
- HVAC ducting and trunking
- Chemical equipment and tanks
- Cooking utensils & food containers
- Stucco embossed sheets
- Trailer panels and transport sheet
- Heat exchanger components
Advantages
- Excellent corrosion resistance
- Excellent formability and weldability
- Stronger than 1100 with no loss of workability
- Anodises cleanly for architectural applications
- Most cost-effective general-purpose sheet alloy
Limitations
- Not heat-treatable; strength is gained only by cold work
- Not suited to highly stressed structural assemblies
