    H Beam vs I Beam: Selection Guide for GCC Construction

    The choice between H and I sections changes connection design, fabrication cost and erection schedule. A field guide for engineers and fabricators.

    Geometry first

    H sections (HEA, HEB, HEM) have wide, parallel flanges roughly equal to the web depth, making them efficient as columns. I sections (IPE, IPN) have narrower, tapered or parallel flanges and are optimised as beams in flexure. The visual shorthand of "H vs I" hides 60+ years of section evolution.

    What contractors actually choose
