    5052 vs 5083 Aluminium: Which One Should You Specify?

    Both are 5xxx-series marine-grade alloys, but they're not interchangeable. Where each one wins, and what it costs.

    Chemistry and mechanicals

    5052 (Al-2.5%Mg, Cr): yield ~193 MPa in H32 temper, excellent formability, the standard for formed marine and pressure-vessel sheet up to 6mm. 5083 (Al-4.4%Mg): yield ~228 MPa in H116, superior corrosion resistance in seawater, the standard for marine plate above 6mm and weld-critical structures.

    When 5052 is the right call

    For thin marine sheet, transport panels, fuel tanks and general fabrication where forming and bending are the dominant operations; 5052 forms cleaner and is more economical per kg.

    When 5083 earns the premium

    Submerged structures, ship hulls, LNG components and high-stress welded plate work; 5083 H116/H321 stays predictable in service. Substituting 5052 here is a false economy.

    Is 5083 worth the cost premium for a small marine project?
    If the structure is welded and submerged, yes; the corrosion resistance and weld performance justify the cost. For above-waterline panels, 5052 is usually adequate.
    Which alloy do GCC shipbuilders prefer?
    Most yards in the UAE specify 5083 H116 for hull plate and 5052 H32 for interior and topside formed sheet.
