    The most widely specified non-heat-treatable aluminium alloy. Outstanding saltwater corrosion resistance and fatigue strength make it the default for marine, chemical and architectural fabrication.

    What is Aluminium Alloy 5052?

    Aluminium Alloy 5052 is the most widely produced aluminium–magnesium alloy. With ~2.5 % magnesium and ~0.25 % chromium, 5052 delivers an outstanding balance of corrosion resistance, fatigue strength, formability and weldability. It is the default specification for any aluminium fabrication exposed to salt water, marine atmosphere, industrial chemicals or repeated mechanical loading.

    5052 cold-forms, bends, roll-forms and spins very well. Welds with 5356 or 5183 filler. Machines better than 3003 thanks to higher strength. Anodises to a uniform clear or coloured finish.

    Limitations

    • Not heat-treatable
    • Loses strength when held above ~65 °C for extended periods
    • Lower marine strength than 5083; heavy hull plate applications generally prefer 5083
