What is the difference between natural and synthetic rattan webbing?

Natural rattan webbing is woven from peeled palm cane and is an interior-grade material. Synthetic webbing uses UV-stabilised polyethylene (PE) strands that mimic the geometry of natural rattan but withstand outdoor exposure, sun, rain and humidity for 5–10 years. Specify natural for interiors, PE for outdoor.

What is paper rattan webbing and where is it used?

Paper rattan webbing is woven from twisted kraft paper cord, sometimes wrapped around an inner fiber thread for added strength. It delivers the visual character of cane in a lighter, more cost-effective form and is widely specified for light furniture, decorative wall panels, packaging and craft applications. It is an interior-only material.

What is cotton webbing and how does it compare to cane?

Cotton webbing is woven from soft natural cotton cord, offering a tactile textile-like face with a softer, contemporary character. It is specified for designer furniture, soft furnishings and feature interior panels where a warmer, more textile aesthetic is required. Available in natural ivory and custom dye colours on indent.

How wide does rattan webbing come?

TIC Dubai supplies natural rattan webbing in standard export widths of 40, 45, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 and 100 cm, in 15 m rolls. Plastic, paper and cotton variants ship in 60–100 cm widths. Wider custom widths and bespoke patterns are produced on indent against project quantity, typically with a 4–6 week lead time.

Which weave pattern should I specify for cabinet doors?

For ventilated cabinet doors (wardrobes, sideboards, AV cabinets) the open octagonal weave is the default, with 1/2" mesh used where a smaller visual rhythm is needed. For fully closed decorative drawer fronts, 3×3 closed weave or twilled weave are the most-specified options.

Can rattan webbing be stained or painted?

Yes. Natural rattan webbing is supplied untreated and accepts wood stain, water-based dye, lacquer, shellac and oil finishes. For furniture, a clear matte lacquer is the most common protective finish. Paint adheres well after a light sand and primer but obscures the natural grain. Paper and cotton variants can be supplied pre-dyed on indent.

How is rattan webbing fitted into furniture?

Webbing is installed into a routed groove around the panel perimeter and locked with a tapered cane spline glued in place, the same century-old technique used on Thonet and Wegner chairs. The webbing is soaked briefly before installation so it drum-tightens as it dries.

Is rattan webbing durable under heavy use?

Yes, when properly tensioned and protected from extreme humidity changes. Quality natural cane webbing on a domestic chair seat typically delivers 15–25 years of service. Hospitality-grade applications should specify denser weaves and clear lacquer finish for abrasion resistance.

Can natural rattan webbing be used outdoors in Dubai?

No. UAE conditions, direct sun, 90%+ summer humidity, salt air on coastal sites, will degrade natural cane within 6–18 months. For outdoor projects always specify UV-stabilised PE synthetic rattan webbing from the Plastic Collection.

What is radio weave used for?

Radio weave, horizontal cane bars over vertical reeds, was originally the front-grille material for mid-century wooden radio cabinets. Today it is specified for cocktail bar fronts, speaker grilles, art deco joinery and retro hospitality interiors where a strong horizontal rhythm is required.

Q: What is rattan webbing?

Rattan webbing is a flat woven mesh or panel produced from the peeled outer skin of the Calamus rattan palm. The peeled cane strips are loomed into recurring geometric patterns, hexagonal, twilled, radio, plain, and supplied in standard roll widths for furniture, joinery and architectural panel fabrication.
